“I remember being on the couch. They were all crying at the same time,” she told the judges. “All I wanted was to be a mom, and I couldn’t do it.” She shared that she prayed for peace in that moment. “I was praying that the Lord would calm my spirit. I got up off my couch, and I wrote this song.”
As she sang, the camera captured Underwood visibly emotional. The country superstar, who has spoken publicly about her own experiences with loss and surrendering control to God, reached for a tissue and wiped away tears. When the performance ended, she responded simply, “Well, that’s just about the most relatable song I’ve ever heard.”

Faith has been central to Harper’s journey from the beginning. In a recent social media post, she revealed that she spent months praying about whether to pursue a solo career in country music. “I didn’t want to tread on ground that wasn’t appointed for my feet,” she wrote, adding that when the opportunity came, “I ran through it.” She also pointed followers to Joshua 1:9: “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Harper’s story resonates not only because of her vulnerability, but because of her roots. The southeast Missouri native began performing at just nine years old and later toured full-time with her family’s bluegrass group, The Harper Collective, alongside her parents and siblings. The band won the SPBGMA International Band Contest in 2010 and recorded multiple albums before Harper stepped into this new solo chapter.
Offstage, she is a devoted wife and mother. She married her husband Devon at 18, welcomed her first child at 19, and now raises three boys while continuing to build her music career. In a heartfelt post last year, she described realizing that motherhood itself was her greatest ministry. “I finally opened his cheese,” she told the judges during her audition, recalling the moment her young son asked for help. “And when I did, I realized that God had put me in that place.”
That honest realization became the heart of “String Cheese.”
