She can command a stadium with a single note.
But when the lights go down, Carrie Underwood reaches for yarn, sourdough starter… and homegrown hot peppers.
Carrie Underwood Embraces “Granny Hobbies” — And Fans Can’t Get Enough
Carrie Underwood may be an eight-time Grammy winner and a judge on American Idol, but her off-stage life looks nothing like the glitz of Hollywood.
In fact, she proudly calls her favorite pastimes “granny hobbies.”
“I love to crochet. I love to do a little birdwatching, and I have sourdough, and I make my own kombucha, and I love to grow hot peppers and make my own fermented hot sauce,” she shared in a recent interview with On The Red Carpet.
Yes — while other celebrities unwind at exclusive parties, Underwood is perfecting her fermented hot sauce recipe.
And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Reality Is Vacuuming and Cleaning Toilets”
For the Tennessee-based superstar, normal life isn’t an escape — it’s the goal.
“Everything is very compartmentalized, and this entertainment world that we live in is not reality,” she explained. “Reality is vacuuming and cleaning toilets and doing laundry and gardening and cooking — and that’s a world I love.”
It’s a surprisingly grounded take from someone who rose to fame after winning American Idol in 2005 and went on to become one of country music’s biggest powerhouses.
But scroll through her Instagram, and you’ll see it’s not just talk.

From Red Carpets to Crochet Squares
Underwood began documenting her crochet journey in 2024, sharing a flower-patterned square with the caption: “getting the hang of it.”
Hours later? Four squares.
“I’m. So. Excited! I’m getting better!!!! #crochet #IDoGrannyThings,” she wrote in her Instagram Stories.
Soon, her hobby evolved into wearable art.
She started crafting handmade tops and dresses — and even wore them on the American Idol set. In May 2025, she posted a photo crocheting while sitting in the hair and makeup chair before going on air.
“Glam & crochet anyone?” she joked.
One standout creation? A tomato-themed crochet top she proudly wore to the Idol set, pairing it with distressed denim and sneakers.
“I’m so happy how it turned out,” she captioned the post. “I just kept it really simple and added a ruffle at the bottom. Now what should I make? #crochet #newbie.”
Weeks later, she debuted a full tomato-and-flower crochet dress while posing with an Idol contestant — proving that handmade can absolutely meet primetime.

Bread, Canning, and Farm Life
Crochet isn’t her only “granny” pursuit.
Underwood also mills her own grains and bakes bread from scratch. In December, she revealed she made Ezekiel bread using grains she ground herself.
“It’s so yummy! Extra fun to mill the grains myself,” she wrote, admitting she had to hunt down some ingredients online because they weren’t easy to find in stores.
Then there’s canning.
In June 2025, while her two sons were away for the weekend, Underwood decided to tackle her freezer inventory — pressure-canning dozens of pheasants into soup and pot pie filling, turning blackberries and blueberries into cobbler filling, and experimenting with plums grown on her farm.
“I feel accomplished!!! Yay me!” she wrote, proudly showing off rows of homemade jars.
She also grows squash — including tromboncino — planning to eat from her garden all winter long.

Superstar, Mom, Homesteader
Married to former NHL player Mike Fisher, Underwood balances farm life with raising their two sons, Isaiah, 10, and Jacob, 7 — all while serving as a judge on the same show that launched her career two decades ago.
And despite the spotlight, she seems most fulfilled when she’s in her garden or testing a sourdough starter.
In an industry obsessed with glam squads and viral moments, Carrie Underwood is proudly choosing something slower.
Quieter.
Homemade.
And maybe that’s the most rebellious thing of all.
